Anatomy of a Mobile Companion App
Most gamers who have experienced a Mobile Companion App (MoCA) for their favorite game immediately recognize the incredible value. Being able to engage with the game from their mobile saves them time, keeps them in the know, enhances their gaming experience, and can even make them more successful in the game. A MoCA is sweet! No doubt!
But what is it that makes a MoCA compelling? And what types of online games can benefit from the increased gamer engagement that we know a MoCA can bring?
At AFK Interactive, we think the criteria comes down to just three aspects of the online gaming experience:
1. Persona
2. Economy
3. Community
If you can re-create the gamer's experience of these three ingredients of the game on the mobile, then said gamers will be downloading the MoCA as fast as you can make it.
Let's take a brief tour of each criteria and
see how it might be applied to the mobile realm.
Persona
This can include achievements, stats, equipage, and more. Some online games, like MMORPG's, have an incredibly rich array of persona status and customizations. Other online games have various collectibles, ranging from skills and spells to resources and money. The ability to browse this information, PLUS search and browse the personas of other gamers, is a feature that translates well to a mobile app. This allows the gamer to explore and learn new details of the game from their mobile, increasing their engagement.
Economy
Online games often support economic transactions, amongst the players in the form of trade and auction, and in the form of a virtual marketplace involving real-world monetary transactions. The ability for the gamer to tap (pun intended!) into this aspect of the game from their mobile gives them increased time and incentive to participate in said economy. Game features like virtual goods storefronts and auction houses are fully supportable in a mobile app. Additionally, being able to "grind" on the mobile, using well-designed mini-games, can earn a player in-game currency or items as rewards. By engaging in these important aspects of the game from the mobile, players reap the benefit of having more time for "Mayhem" during their next gaming session.
Community
Certainly, players return again and again to many online games for the social interaction. Game-based social networks were around long before Facebook, and many gamers are deeply attached to their in-game guilds, teammates, and fellow competitors. Common community features like chat, friend lists, and messaging are almost tailor-made for today's mobile devices. Additionally, having the ability to push notifications and reminders to fellow gamers will revolutionize matchmaking.
These three aspects of an online game: persona, economy, and community, all translate very well to the MoCA. Additionally, persona, economy, and community are becoming must-have features for ALL online games. Social games are the fastest growing segment, with over 1.5 billion gamers globally. Community is key, and to build a community players need a persistent identity in the game, and easy and fun ways of staying in touch.
Also, with virtual goods sales already topping $3 Billion annually, doesn't 24/7 access to those features translate to increased ARPU? We certainly think so.
At AFK Interactive, we feel that the features that make current and future online games attractive are some of the very same features that make a compelling Mobile Companion App. We think that in a short period of time, these apps will be a necessary complement to online games, and will greatly enhance player engagement. That is why AFK Interactive is creating a platform that is purpose-built to deliver these features for all types of online games across the full array of popular mobile devices.
We're here to help you get started building your game's mobile future, TODAY.
